Las Vegas was a little extra sizzling last month, thanks to the Kajukenbo Ohana Association’s (KOA) 1st Annual Grand Masters Championships, held at The Plaza. DJ’s had a fantastic time at the tournament. Here are the results from those of our group who competed and placed in their age divisions:
Sigung Doug Jones*, Grand Champion, Men’s Point Sparring
Sifu Damond Troupe*, Grand Champion, Men’s Point Sparring
Andrea Lancaster, First Place, Forms
Chelseah Lonzaga, Grand Champion, Forms and Weapons
Anne Raftery, Second Place, Forms
Shawntell de Ramus, Second Place, Women’s Point Sparring
Nicole Scott, First Place, First Timers Women’s Point Sparring
Congratulations to everyone, including Mike Polter, who competed in Point Sparring, and Melanie Hilario, who competed in Point Sparring as well as Forms.
*We’re very proud to announce that Doug Jones was promoted to Sigung and 6th degree black belt, and Damond Troupe to Sifu and 3rd degree black belt. Their new titles and ranks were presented at the awards dinner on Friday, July 18th. What a momentous occasion!
Finally, in addition to attending the KOA Championships as a school and family, we were able to see the Kajukenbo Grand Masters and meet other members from the Kajukenbo and general martial arts communities. It was a great experience, and we look forward to going to Vegas next year.
